Battle for Grolle edition 2017, again a great success!
24 October 2017
The organisation team of the Battle for Grolle is looking back at a very successful sixth edition of the event. This year, approximately 30.000 spectators visited Groenlo, to share the experience of the recapture from the Spaniards by Prince Frederik Hendrik. A large number of these visitors came from across the German border.
Record number of re-enactors
A record number of 1600 re-enactors from 15 different countries fought alongside on the battle field. And in the inner city an unprecedented number of groups from Groenlo, and surroundings, participated in the event. The sun was seen regularly causing the streets to be crowded with strolling people enjoying the authentic atmosphere while having a bite and a drink.
The event could count on great interest from national press, partly due to items in the “NOS” 8 ‘o clock news, “Goedemorgen Nederland’, “Editie NL”, “Omroep MAX”, as well as extensive coverage in national papers, with as a result visitors from all over the Netherlands knowing where to find Groenlo. In addition, the number of German visitors increased significantly.
Citizens and volunteers
Next to the 1600 re-enactors from all over the world, the organization could count on the help of more than 1700 volunteers from Groenlo and surroundings. These volunteers depicted the Battle for Grolle in the inner city but also helped at the cash points, the barriers, the parking areas and offered all kinds of other services. The organization wants to thank you all immensely.
Groenlo/Palmanova (I) – Mayor Annette Bronsvoort, alderman Bart Porskamp of the municipality of Oost Gelre, members of the Board of the ‘ Slag om Grolle ‘ plus the Compagnie Grolle will, next weekend, pay an official visit to the Italian Fortress City Palmanova. They do this at the invitation of the municipality of the city. Following a visit by Adriana Danielis, Vice Mayor of Palmanova to the ‘ Slag om Grolle ‘ in 2017.
The seventh edition of the Battle for Grolle will take place in 2019 on October 18, 19 and 20. This has been announced by the organization.
It is well known that the Battle for Grolle is the world biggest 17th century reenactment event. During the previous edition there was great interest from the press. Not only was the event covered on the frontpage of the biggest daily newspaper in the Netherlands (“De Telegraaf”), but was also an item during prime-time-news broadcast on Dutch national TV (“NOS 8 uur journal”) as well as on various other commercial- and regional TV stations.

From the “Halve Maan” sounds a loud bang, a cannonball flies over Grolle, right through the roof of the old Calixtuschurch. Smoke rises from the tower of the church, on which top the Spanish flag still flies. This was a last warning to the city commander Matthys Dulken to surrender, but he refuses…

The trailer below can also be found on our website and our Facebook page.
During the Battle for Grolle it is possible, thanks to Marieke, to have all kinds of letters, postcards and doodles delivered to the soldiers in the encampments.
Letters to the participants of the Battle for Grolle can be written in advance at home, but can also be written in the camp. Located in the tent of Cooper’s Choice (Kerkwal, near the basilica) is a letterbox where you can post your mail. Make sure that your letter or card bears the name of the recipient and the name of the regiment. One or more post rounds run daily along the encampments, depending on the amount of mail in the mailbox. Read more
