Groenlo/Palmanova (I) – Mayor Annette Bronsvoort, alderman Bart Porskamp of the municipality of Oost Gelre, members of the Board of the ‘ Slag om Grolle ‘ plus the Compagnie Grolle will, next weekend, pay an official visit to the Italian Fortress City Palmanova. They do this at the invitation of the municipality of the city. Following a visit by Adriana Danielis, Vice Mayor of Palmanova to the ‘ Slag om Grolle ‘ in 2017.
That weekend, in Palmanova, a battle from the so-called “Uskok war” will be re-enacted. Members of the Compagnie Grolle will participate in the battle. “In those days, an army of 3,000 soldiers, mercenaries from the Netherlands under the leadership of Johann Ernst of Nassau Siegen went to Italy to fight on behalf of the Republic of Venice,” said Marjolein Hack of the Slag om Grolle. “They had the time to do this, because in those days the Netherlands was under a 12-year-long truce”, she adds.
Palmanova is the second largest 17-century event in Europe. About 1,000 re-enenactors will put their tents up on one of the Bastions in the Italian Fortress city. The ‘ Slag om Grolle ‘ is slightly larger with 1,400 re-enecators.
“We’re not accepting each invitation we receive, but we attach great importance to the event ‘ Slag om Grolle ‘ and maybe we can, from a tourist point of view, strengthen our relations with Palmanova. Besides, it is also always good to take a look behind the scenes of another great event, “says alderman Porskamp (who, in the context of the Program ‘City Groenlo’, visits Palmanova).
The Fortress of Palmanova was built in the 16th century and has been on Unesco’s World Heritage List since June 2017.
