On Saturday October 9 a start was made digging the trenches of the battlefield for ‘de Slag om Grolle 2010’.
From the corps de garde (a guardhouse for soldiers) the trenches already nearing the Spanish position. After the first battle on Friday, October 22, the trenches will approach the city even closer as on Sunday they directly lie before the Spanish line.
While the excavator is progressing members of the Companie Grolle are engaged in manufacturing a number of gabions.
These will be filled with sand and placed left and right of a gun position to protect the cannon crew. This is the way it was done in the 17th century, so it will not surprise you to see these details during ‘de Slag om Grolle’.
