PRESS RELEASE – Grolsch and Brouwersnös jointly brew specialty beers for the Battle of Grolle

New specialty beer available exclusively around the Battle of Grolle 2019

Beer brewers Grolsch and Brouwersnös are joining forces in honor of the Battle of Grolle 2019. Especially for this seventh edition of the Battle, they will jointly brew a new one-off specialty beer. This beer is exclusively available in the run-up to and during the event. What the specialty beer is going to be, is up to the master brewers of both breweries. They will be working on this in the coming months – together with the organization of the Battle of Grolle. In any case, it is clear that the beer will be brewed in Groenlo, the birthplace of Grolsch and location of Brouwersnös. In the course of this year, consumers will be asked to think about a suitable name for this beer, related to stories from that time.

Beer and the Battle for Grolle

From Friday 18 to Sunday 20 October 2019, the Battle of Grolle will take place for the seventh time. For three days the city is transformed into the fortified city of Grolle at the time of the Battle of Grolle in 1627. The historic battle between the States and the Spaniards is simulated down to the smallest detail. A recurring historical spectacle involving more than 1,600 re-enactors from all over Europe. The historic city center of Groenlo is undergoing a true metamorphosis that made visitors imagine themselves in the 17th century. And of course, beer is part of that!

Marc Janssen and Henk-Jan ten Brincke, Master brewers at Grolsch, together with Gerti van Hal and Johan Schröder, Master brewers at Brouwersnös, will develop the specialty beer for the Battle of Grolle 2019. This naturally takes place in close consultation with the organization of the Battle of Grolle. The beer is then brewed in the new Brouwersnös brewery in Groenlo, located in the garden of Villa Adriana.

The ties with Groenlo

Jos Oostendorp, head of the Brouwersnös Brewery: “As initiators of Brouwersnös, we share a bit of history in beer with Grolsch and Groenlo. That is precisely why we think it is great that Grolsch, the Battle of Grolle and Brouwersnös are now jointly developing and brewing this unique beer for beer lovers.”

Melanie Koning, Marketing Manager Grolsch: “Grolsch is proud of its home region and is therefore happy to commit itself to Twente, the Achterhoek and its native city of Groenlo in particular. We have been closely involved in this since the inception of the Battle of Grolle. Now that Groenlo has had a brewery within its city limits again since years, it is obvious to work together with a beer specially brewed for this occasion. Wondering what the brewers will make of it together!”
