The Spanish flag flies on the top of the church tower in Grolle. In the street, children are playing children’s games, merchants are haggling about the price of their goods, a barrel of beer is being put up, pigs are spinning on a spit. Everything just seems to be peaceful… until the message arrives that the Staatse army, under command of Prince Frederik Hendrik, is approaching. Horses are galloping across the firing range. Canons are roaring, muskets are fired and the re-enactors go to battle. Grolle is under siege!

Be amazed and impressed by this extraordinary spectacle, experience the authentic 17th century’s life in the stronghold, watch the Battle for Grolle and imagine yourself being present in the year 1627!

Post delivery service in the camps

During the Battle for Grolle it is possible, thanks to Marieke, to have all kinds of letters, postcards and doodles delivered to the soldiers in the encampments.

Letters to the participants of the Battle for Grolle can be written in advance at home, but can also be written in the camp. Located in the tent of Cooper’s Choice (Kerkwal, near the basilica) is a letterbox where you can post your mail. Make sure that your letter or card bears the name of the recipient and the name of the regiment. One or more post rounds run daily along the encampments, depending on the amount of mail in the mailbox. Read more »
